Angle of Incidence- The Head Shots

These images came from the confluence of some long flowing strains of interest and a few well timed surprises.

- In my travels, I am drawn to unique textures and patterns, both man made and natural. I am moved by evidence of human ambition and innovation, and by evidence of time and evolution. I particularly love the layering of the two. I have a big collection of slides of odd stuff.

- I worked for years as a lighting designer for dance, exploring ways to shape, reveal, conceal and alter the perception of the human form, and watching the emotional impact of those alterations.

- I am fascinated by the psychobiology of optics. Our eyes and brain work together to compile the evidence drawn from nerve impulses, past experience and intuition, trying to arrive at a plausible explanation for what we see. That very desire to make sense, makes us vulnerable to deception.

- One New Year's Eve, my friend Vlad shaved off his signature "7 year dreads". Fascinated by his freshly exposed head, it was obvious that it would make an evocative canvas.

Many thanks to Vladimir Lubel and John Gordon for modeling. Many thanks to Libby Roberts for the invaluable assistance. And many thanks to my father, Geoffrey Heller, for so kindly lending his 50 year old Rolleiflex TLR.
